The Aros Heart has been in development for in excess of ten years and aims to resemble the natural heart in form and function better than any other heart assisting device. The development of the Aros Heart takes into account recent development related to flow dynamics, materials, pump physiology, and device power supply.

A significant amount of attention was given to flow dynamics early on in the development of the Aros Heart. A computer model was developed in the early stages of development in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, which resulted in two thesis published in 2004 (see the documentation section for details).

Several iteration prototypes have been developed and tested since then with additional significant input from several leading Thorax Clinics in Sweden - including Lund, Sahlgrenska in Gothenburg, and Uppsala. Several members remain in the project group and on the Scientific Advisory Board.

The Aros Heart is patented in key markets with additional patent applications to be filed in 2010 based on recent technological improvements. The next step of development is to fine-tune form and functionality in collaboration with project partners using, inter alia, 3D MRI to analyse the Aros Heart pumping liquids in real time.
